The notion that the Washington Nationals have turned on the power switch will be tested again Monday night when they visit the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of a three-game series. After finishing 29th in the majors with 135 home runs last season, the Nationals added Nathaniel Lowe and Josh Bell in the offseason. The moves paid off on Sunday afternoon when each homered in a 5-1 victory over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. "Those are our two big boys," Washington manager Dave Martinez said.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a game-tying two-run homer and Josh Naylor doubled in the go-ahead run, all in an eight-run eighth inning, to lift the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 10-6 victory over the Chicago Cubs in Phoenix on Sunday afternoon. Alek Thomas and Corbin Carroll walked to open Arizona's eighth inning before Geraldo Perdomo hit a two-run double off Eli Morgan (0-1), and Gurriel tied the game on a 416-foot homer to left-center. Gabriel Moreno singled and scored on Naylor's double to deep center for a 7-6 lead, before Eugenio Suarez was intentionally walked. Naylor and Suarez pulled off a double-steal before pinch-hitter Ryne Nelson — a pitcher — grounded a single through the drawn-in infield

After taking three of four games in their season-opening series, the Texas Rangers will hit the road for the first time in 2025 when they face the Cincinnati Reds on Monday evening. The Rangers dropped the first game of the season on Thursday to the Boston Red Sox before winning the next three contests, including Sunday's 3-2 victory in Arlington, Texas. The Rangers have picked up speed despite nagging injuries piling up. Third baseman Josh Jung landed on the 10-day injured list with neck spasms.

The ending to the Chicago Cubs' four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks had a very familiar feel to it for Cubs fans. After a Kyle Tucker home run gave the Cubs a 6--2 lead on Sunday, and an opportunity to take three of four over the weekend, the bullpen imploded. The Diamondbacks scored 8 times in the final frame of the 8th inning, allowing them to cruise to a 10-6 victory. The Cubs will now play the Athletics on Monday night but before they do so, we offer rebuttals to some popular hot takes making the rounds after the opening weekend of the 2025 season.

Victor Scott II and Pedro Pages each hit three-run homers to propel the St. Louis Cardinals to a 9-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. Nolan Gorman also homered for St. Louis, which swept the series and is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2006. Willi Castro homered for the Twins, who lost their first three games for the first time since 2016. Pages had three hits.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Wyatt Langford and Adolis García hit solo home runs in the sixth inning to put the Texas Rangers over the Boston Red Sox 3-2 on Sunday. The homers came after Boston scored twice in the top of the inning off Texas' bullpen to spoil Jacob deGrom's first start of the season. DeGrom allowed two hits in five shutout innings, lifted after nearing his pitch count at 73. Langford's opposite-field homer off rookie Richard Fitts (0-1) barely cleared the wall in the right-field corner. Two batters later, García blasted an 0-2 sweeper into the second deck in left field. The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees, last year's pennant winners, are a combined 8-0. The Yankees bashed their way to three straight wins over Milwaukee, scoring 36 runs and hitting 15 homers against the defending NL Central champs. New York's start was particularly encouraging after the Yankees lost Juan Soto in the offseason and then had Gerrit Cole go down to a season-ending arm problem.
