9/28/24 | Lessons 'happen fast' for young players in closing days. That's the point: Cardinals Extra. It took two days, a bruised shoulder and bind with the bases loaded for Cardinals rookie Kyle Leahy to turn a rocky lesson learned into an immediate result. On Thursday, at Coors Field, Leahy entered a tie game and on the first pitch he threw — a fastball — it no longer was tied. Two games later, in San Francisco on Saturday, teammate Chris Roycroft departed the game after being struck on the shoulder by a line drive and left a bases-loaded jam for a teammate to figure out. 7/21/24 | How rookie Kyle Leahy saved the Cardinals with only a few hours to spend in the majors. When he rolled to his feet at 4:40 a.m. Saturday and headed for the airport to spend a few hours in the majors as the extra, 27th man on the Cardinals' roster, Kyle Leahy knew anything from long relief to short burst awaited him. During his one-night engagement, Leahy pitched arguably the most pivotal and obviously the most combustible inning of a lengthy day. The Braves already had hit four home runs off starter Sonny Gray, three of them by hitters Leahy was about to face in the eighth inning with the slimmest possible lead that still qualifies as a lead.
