11/04/24 2 veteran lefties who started with Tigers resolve 2025 contract options. Two veteran left-handers who started their careers with the Detroit Tigers were on opposite ends of option decisions this weekend. The Chicago Cubs declined to exercise their $10 million option for Drew Smyly. Meanwhile, San Francisco Giants starter Robbie Ray declined to exercise an opt-out clause in his contract. Ray, 33, pitched for the Tigers briefly in 2014 and was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks after the season as part of a three-team deal in which the Tigers acquired pitcher Shane Greene.

8/28/24 Chicago Cubs Slugger Seen as Next Cut Candidate Amid Salary Dump. The Chicago Cubs are red-hot in the month of August, continuing to stay in the hunt for a Wild Card spot after putting together an incredible comeback victory on Wednesday. The players on the field are clearly still fighting for their playoff lives, but because that outcome is unlikely right now, the front office has started positioning themselves to prepare for the offseason as the year comes to a close. With that has come the patented salary dump teams on the outside looking in normally do as they start creating financial flexibility for the winter. Drew Smyly was the first casualty of that when he was placed on outright waivers that will allow contending teams to sign the veteran left-hander for their own playoff push.

Smyly will be able to continue playing for the Cubs until another team chooses to claim him off of waivers.

8/27/24 Lefty Reliever Put on Waivers in Surprise Move; Should Mets go After Him?. The Chicago Cubs reportedly placed veteran left-handed relief pitcher Drew Smyly on waivers Monday, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. Smyly was not designated for assignment. Teams will have two days to claim him, and he would make an enticing addition to any team looking for potential left-handed bullpen matchup depth for a possible October run, which includes the New York Mets. The 35-year old 11-year Major League veteran will immediately become available for contending teams currently in the postseason race as September approaches.

8/14/24 Guardians announcer makes inappropriate call on Cubs pitcher who gave up a home run: 'He wants to kill himself'. This isn't great. 3/16/24 Drew Smyly's role on the Chicago Cubs Opening Day roster revealed. The pitching staff is starting to come into focus for Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell. Counsell is still getting to know each pitcher but stressed that he would focus on building the staff around pitchers who can get outs. The Cubs' pitching staff has already been hit with the injury bug as Caleb Kilian is expected to miss most of the first half of the 2024 season while Jameson Taillon likely will be sidelined most of the first month due to a lingering back issue. Taillon's injury likely will result in Counsell needing to tweak the starting rotation that the Cubs have at the start of the season.

8/23/23 Tigers 8, Cubs 6: Drew Smyly can't start any more games this year. After Drew Smyly threw well in three relief appearances, the Cubs needed to find out whether he could return to the rotation and be as effective as he was earlier this year. Smyly got pounded for eight hits, three walks and seven runs, including a pair of homers and didn't make it out of the fourth inning. The Cubs did try to fight back, but eventually dropped the game, 8-6 to the Tigers. The second Detroit hitter of the game, Andy Ibañez, homered off Smyly, and they scored one more in that inning and another in the second to take a 3-0 lead.
