In 2016 then San Francisco 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick, in uniform at work, took a knee during the national anthem to protest police violence against black people. Kaepernick was permitted to finish the season, as the starting quarterback, in fact, and then, as a free agent, couldn't find any NFL team interested in signing him. The sports media overwhelmingly lionized Kaepernick, turning him into a modern-day sports version of Rosa Parks. As a result, Kaepernick made tens of millions of dollars, far more than he ever could have as a backup quarterback, from ESPN, Nike, Netflix, publishing houses, you name it, all of them threw money at Kaepernick and pronounced him a hero. Anthony Bass was not the only Toronto Blue Jays player following accounts promoting hate targeting the LGBTQS+ communities, and baseball fans are starting to peel back layers and look deep into the social media activity of other members of the team. Over the weekend — which also marked the team's annual Pride celebration — Twitter user @nessuhhr shared a screenshot of the account whose video Anthony Bass shared on Instagram, which set off a media firestorm at the end of May. The screenshot is timestamped May 29 at 5:15 pm, the same day that Bass shared the video calling on Christians to boycott Target and Bud Light and calling the brands “evil,” “demonic,” and “satanic.” The image shows that the account was at that time followed by another Jays pitcher, Canadian reliever Zach Pop. The Jays haven't taken the plunge on tossing Bass overboard (get it?), and there are probably some issues that the MLBPA would have for a player being DFA'd for something he shared on social media (Editor's note: First, he was bitching on Twitter about United Airlines, then he shared homophobic views on Instagram.) You'd have to get into the weeds in the fine print of the contract for sure. The Jays are supposed to instill a buzz in Toronto residents about being from Toronto.
