8/14/25 [Last Word on Sports] - Rays Rookie Speedster Continues to Evolve. is one of the most exciting players in baseball, who is rounding out his overall game in his rookie year with the Tampa Bay Rays. Simpson tantalizes you with raw ability, and the remainder of the regular season will focus on his continued evolution. His defense and offense have progressed at varying paces, even as the speed component remains steady. Going forward, will Simpson make better reads in the outfield? Will he continue making good decisions on the bases while diversifying his offensive game? [caption id="attachment_99390" align="alignnone" width="503"] Mar 15, 2025; Port Charlotte, Florida, USA; Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Chandler Simpson (96) steals second base during the third inning against the New York Yankees at Charlotte Sports Park. Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images[/caption] Rays Rookie Chandler Simpson Does Many Things Well Simpson made himself at home in the confines of West Sacramento in putting together a fantastic series. He went 6-for-10 with two walks and two runs scored in Tampa Bay's recent series against the Athletics. In the month of August, he has a .333 average along with an RBI and four runs scored. Simpson impacts the game in multiple ways as he legs out infield singles and stretches singles into extra base hits. Chandler Simpson's last 37 games: .326-BA/14-SB/.766-OPS ?? — Fuzzy (@fuzzyfromyt) Since his recall from Triple-A Durham on June 24, he has been posting solid production and helping the team in many ways. The Rays said one of the things Simpson needed to work on when he was was the swing and miss in his plate appearances. So how's that going? Simpson is an aggressive hitter who looks like he is swinging with one arm as he departs the batter's box. It has been interesting to see Simpson put the burden on the pitcher to make good pitches, and his plate discipline is improving. His 9.6% strikeout rate is in the 98th percentile of MLB, as is his 11% whiff rate. If he can keep up that pace while playing every day, then Simpson can vault himself into the pantheon of stars in baseball. Nonexistent Power This is one of the unfortunate blemishes in an otherwise solid resumé. Simpson has a giant doughnut hole in the power column of the stat sheet. It's hard to see anything in the underlying metrics that suggests he is just missing a few dingers. His average exit velocity, barrel, and hard-hit readings are all in the bottom 1% of baseball. That's not exactly promising when you consider that he swatted exactly one home run during his three-year minor league career (1,119 plate appearances). Of course, it's not a huge problem if teammates and keep outdoing themselves with their enormous power. Besides, his speed should get him at least one inside-the-park home run. How's That Defense? The defense is getting better, even if the metrics aren't as optimistic. When you watch him play every day, you see the slow but steady improvements being made. There are plenty of plays. The real question over the course of the remainder of the regular season is how Simpson improves his defense on the margins. Is he making better reads and taking good routes on the balls hit to him in the outfield? In the Athletics series, we saw him take a route to a ball that scooted under his glove and permitted the A's to score an extra run. There's no doubt it was a tough play and the Rays ultimately lost the game 6-0, but plays like that are an example of something he can continue to get better at. Last Word On Simpson Simpson is a tantalizing player because he shows you so much potential in one sequence and a few unpolished aspects of his game in another. In the middle game of the A's series, he swatted a one-out single in the third inning. But soon after, he got caught straying too far off first base and was caught stealing. That moment felt like it took the starch out of a potential offensive rally. On the other hand, sometimes his speed at first base causes opposing pitchers to commit throwing errors when trying to control the running game. Overall, Chandler Simpson's to the Rays fandom has been one of the more pleasurable things to watch on a 2025 team that still faces a tall task in order to make the postseason. 8/09/25 Mariners slugger Eugenio Suarez shows off the cannon vs Rays. Eugenio Suárez is known for his power bat, but on Friday night against the Tampa Bay Rays, it was his glove — and arm — that turned heads. In a key defensive moment, the Seattle Mariners third baseman made a slick stop on a grounder and fired an on-the-money throw to retire the blazing-fast Chandler Simpson. It was a play that underscored why Seattle targeted Suárez at the trade deadline, and a reminder that his value extends beyond the batter's box. The Mariners are riding high after winning six of their last seven games, a surge that has them sitting just 1.5 games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West standings.

7/10/25 Right-Hander Bryan Baker Crumbles in Rays Debut in 4-3 Loss to Red Sox. Center fielder Chandler Simpson hit an infield single to set the franchise record for the longest hitting streak by a rookie at 14 games. Later, shortstop Ha-Seong Kim launched a two-run blast over the Green Monster in the fourth inning to give him his first home run in a Rays jersey and his team a 2-1 lead. Junior Caminero followed suit in the sixth, crushing a solo shot to give him his 23rd home run of the season and his second in as many games.

7/01/25 Speedy Rays' Jose Caballero, Chandler Simpson Make Franchise History. The Tampa Bay Rays have made a habit of compiling historical accomplishments before the All-Star break, and they've added another one to the list. Rays shortstop/outfielder José Caballero, MLB's leader in stolen bases, and Chandler Simpson, the rookie leader in stolen bases, are the first pair of Rays players to reach 20 stolen bases before July since Carl Crawford (28 stolen bases) and B.J. Upton (24) in 2010.

6/09/25 Tampa Bay Rays Prospect Achieves Career First at Triple-A as Strong 2025 Continues. If Chandler Simpson is smarting after the Tampa Bay Rays sent him to Triple-A Durham, he isn't showing it. Simpson, 24, went 5-for-5 Sunday as the Durham Bulls routed the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Miami Marlins affiliate) 10-2. It was his first career 5-for-5 game. The Rays surprisingly sent Simpson to Durham on May 30, despite a strong start to his MLB career there.

6/01/25 Hitter Profiles: Need for Speed. Chandler Simpson was just sent down by the Tampa Bay Rays in favor of Jake Mangum much to the chagrin of fantasy managers. He was hitting .285 with 17 runs and 19 steals across 34 games. Since his call-up on April 19th, he had more steals than anyone else in professional baseball and more than seven entire teams. But despite the blazing speed and .285 average, Simpson posted just an 85 wRC+, meaning he was performing 15% below league average as a hitter. His OBP hovered around league norms, his slug was nonexistent and fielding was not as good as hoped. This is the dilemma: elite speed plays in fantasy, often disproportionately. Yet in real life, if you can’t hit enough to justify a lineup spot, that speed becomes a tool without a stage. Speed can be scarce especially for those in rotisserie formats. Over the past few seasons, stolen bases have surged across MLB, but true category dominant threats remain rare.

6/01/25 Chandler Simpson decision part of Rays’ focus on winning more now. TAMPA — Rays officials — just like fans and media — were impressed with how well Chandler Simpson played and how his speed impacted games during his first six weeks in the majors, especially given his limited Triple-A experience. But they want him to be better — specifically in getting on base more (.315 on-base percentage) and playing better defense in the outfield. So in deciding fellow ...

5/31/25 Amid 'tough' roster move, Rays face Astros again. In a nod to their outfield depth -- amid their series against the Houston Astros -- the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday optioned rookie speedster Chandler Simpson to Triple-A Durham to make room for the returning Jake Mangum. Over the 35 games since his big league debut on April 19, Simpson validated his reputation as a runner by stealing 19 bases in 22 attempts. After the Astros responded with a 2-1 win on Friday, the teams will play the third contest of their four-game series on Saturday afternoon in Houston. Simpson, 24, posted a modest batting line of .285/.315/.317, but his speed benefited the Rays and made the decision to option him difficult.
