11/04/24 | Will Red Sox add closer to replace Kenley Jansen? Justin Slaten a candidate?. Red Sox' Justin Slaten delivers a pitch to a Padres batter in the seventh inning June 30. (AP Photo/Steven Senne) AP By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com SAN ANTONIO — Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has his work cut out for him trying to upgrade the Red Sox bullpen. Boston ranked 24th in reliever ERA (4.39), blew 31 saves last season and must replace its two highest-leverage relievers. Both closer Kenley Jansen and setup man Chris Martin are free agents. 9/18/24 | Patience pays off for Red Sox, with reliever Justin Slaten in command since return from injury. While the Sox have used him for single-inning stints since he came off the IL rather than the multi-innings role in which he impressed prior to his injury, the results (9? innings, 2 runs, 10 strikeouts, and 0 walks following a scoreless seventh inning in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Rays) and the stuff have been impressive. While the Sox have used him for single-inning stints since he came off the IL rather than the multi-innings role in which he impressed prior to his injury, the results and the stuff have been impressive. Including a scoreless inning in the Sox' 2-1 win over the Rays Wednesday night, Slaten has totaled 9? innings, 2 runs, 10 strikeouts, and 0 walks. “You see he can be a potential All-Star closer,” said pitching coach Andrew Bailey. 9/11/24 | Alex Cora Challenges For 'Monsters' In Future Red Sox Bullpen. The Boston Red Sox got tremendous pitching during the first half of the season. The Boston bullpen shoulders plenty of that performance, lacking a widespread ability to miss bats and attack hitters. "We see it against us," Cora told reporters at Fenway Park on Wednesday. Outside of Justin Slaten and Kenley Jansen, who's about to be a free agent, the Red Sox don't have many dominant whiff-inducing relievers. 9/05/24 | Hallsville's Slaten throws scoreless inning; Red Sox lose. Former Hallsville Bobcat Justin Slaten tossed a scoreless frame in the Red Sox 8-3 loss to the New York Mets. Slaten faced Jeff McNeil to begin the inning. McNeil reached on a fielding error by the Boston first basemen. McNeil attempted to reach second base on the throw, but was thrown out by the right fielder for the first out of the inning. Source: https://www.kltv.com/2024/09/05/hallsvilles-slaten... |
8/26/24 | Red Sox make slew of roster moves to bring back star reliever from Injured List. The Boston Red Sox just made a bunch of roster moves regarding their bullpen following the first game of the double-header against the Toronto Blue Jays. Firstly, they have reinstated Justin Slaten from the 15-day IL. Slaten has been one of the best relievers in the bullpen, so he definitely will help the Red Sox late game pitching. Secondly, they optioned righty reliever Josh Winckowski to AAA. Winckowski has been an ok to mediocre reliever this year, with a 4.45 ERA. Last year, he was much better with a 2.88 ERA. Finally, Bailey Horn is being made the 27th man on the Sox's roster for the second game against Toronto. Horn has a 6.48 ERA, so it is odd to bring him back up, but the Sox probably Source: https://www.sportingnews.com/us/mlb/news/red-sox-m... |
8/24/24 | Key Red Sox Reliever's Return In Question After Shaky Rehab Outing. If there's one area where the Boston Red Sox need all the help they can get right now, it's the bullpen. Since the All-Star break, the Red Sox bullpen has been in a free-fall. Amid a grueling stretch that sees the Red Sox scheduled for 27 games in 27 days, it would be hugely valuable for Boston to get one of its most reliable weapons back on the bump. Justin Slaten, a rookie right-handed reliever who got a lot of work in high-leverage spots throughout the first half of the season, has been missing in action since July 7. 8/23/24 | Red Sox reliever shows off impressive memory in recalling battle vs. David Ortiz. The Boston Red Sox's bullpen has struggled since the All-Star break, making it imperative that their offense builds an insurmountable lead early in games. However, the group is getting some reinforcements in the coming weeks with Justin Slaten and Liam Hendriks expected to be activated from the injured list soon. The latter will be making his debut with Boston after signing a two-year contract this offseason despite having Tommy John in 2023. NESN recently shared a video of Hendriks recalling a battle he had against David Ortiz in a June game back in 2015. Hendriks remembered the exact situation, including the inning, how many outs there were, who was on base and who he struck out. 7/26/24 | Justin Slaten hopes his cautious recovery gets him back with the Red Sox sooner than later. As the Red Sox went 1-5 during their swing through Los Angeles and Colorado coming out of the All-Star break, righthander Justin Slaten felt helpless — particularly while seeing his team lose three games in which it had the lead in the eighth inning or later. It's impossible to say whether the rookie — who landed on the injured list on the Sunday before the break due to right elbow inflammation — would have been able to change the outcome if he'd been on the roster. 7/22/24 | With trade deadline approaching, this is a bad time for the Red Sox to be struggling. A relief corps already thinned by injuries to Justin Slaten and Chris Martin was further emptied by the fact that closer Kenley Jansen couldn't make the trip to Colorado because of past heartbeat irregularities he'd experienced when pitching at Coors Field. And so, Zack Kelly was asked not only to handle a scoreless ninth inning but to come back for the 10th inning to close out a 7-5 victory. 7/12/24 | Red Sox Place Standout Reliever On IL Ahead Of Series Vs. Royals. The Red Sox will be without one of their two set up men in the bullpen for at least a couple of weeks. The Red Sox announced Friday prior to their series opener against the Kansas City Royals at Fenway Park that they placed reliever Justin Slaten on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. The move is retroactive to July 9 and Boston recalled lefty Cam Booser to take Slaten's spot on the active roster. Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters he isn't concerned about the injury for Slaten and hopes to get him back after Boston's first series following the All-Star break. 7/04/24 | Nick Pivetta pitches seven one-hit innings, bullpen blows lead, but Red Sox still complete sweep of Marlins with win in 12 innings. Pivetta lost his bid for history, but the Sox went on to win a wild game, 6-5, in 12 innings. Pivetta was magnificent, striking out 10 and giving up what was mostly an assortment of weak contact until Jesús Sanchez belted a long triple with two outs in the seventh. Pivetta left the game with a 2-0 lead then lost the decision when Justin Slaten and Brennan Bernardino gave up two runs with two outs in the eighth inning. Then, as Jarren Duran described it, the teams exchanged punches. Source: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/07/04/sports/red-... |
6/24/24 | Hallsville's Slaten earns 8th hold in Red Sox win on Sunday. Former Hallsville Bobcast Justin Slaten tossed a scoreless inning of relief in Boston's 7-4 win over the Reds on Sunday. The right hander entered the game in the eighth inning. Slaten forced Tyler Stephenson to fly out to center field for the first out of the inning. Slaten then got Jonathan India to strike out swinging for the second out. Source: https://www.kltv.com/2024/06/24/hallsvilles-slaten... |
6/15/24 | Red Sox Notes: Yankees Rivalry Lives Up To Hype For First Timers. Red Sox vs. Yankees is different. Justin Slaten and Cooper Criswell got that opportunity Saturday. “It's everything you see as a kid growing up,” Slaten said postgame. Slaten performed admirably in his first exposure to Red Sox-Yankees, picking up the win and allowing just one run in 2 2/3 innings of relief. 5/18/24 | Red Sox lose: Rookie reliever unravels in 8th, spoiling another Kutter Crawford start. Justin Slaten's struggles cost the Red Sox in a brutal loss Saturday night. (Photo by Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images) Getty Images By Chris Cotillo | ccotillo@MassLive.com ST. LOUIS — Rafael Devers and Kutter Crawford held up their ends of the bargain for the Red Sox on Saturday night. But much like it has been for much of May, there weren't many others who did. Despite Devers' fourth homer in as many games and another strong start from Crawford, the Red Sox fell, 7-2, to the Cardinals, marking Boston's fourth straight loss. A five-run eighth-inning Cardinals rally against reliever Justin Slaten was the difference as Boston fell two games under .500 at 22-24 and 5-11 in May. 5/01/24 | Hallsville alum, Red Sox pitcher Justin Slaten says 'it's a privilege' to play for Boston. “You know, I talked about it in the semifinal game and the state game: making memories. This is just another memory that these guys have to share with each other and with this community and, you know, to have that many people show up on a Tuesday night, just to see guys given a ring, speaks to the special group that we've gotten in the community and the support that we've had," Coach Therwhanger said. 4/30/24 | Red Sox shut out Giants in interleague series opener at Fenway Park. The Red Sox earned their third consecutive win Tuesday night with a 4-0 victory over the Giants in the first of a three-game interleague set. The Sox held the Giants to just two hits through 8? innings, but back-to-back hits against Justin Slaten in the ninth with one out put runners at first and second. 4/19/24 | Mets traded 'nasty' pitcher an hour after taking him. Do they regret it now?. Boston Red Sox pitcher Justin Slaten has emerged as a dominant bullpen piece. AP By Jimmy Hascup | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com A 2.97 ERA through 72 2/3 innings (18 games) can do a lot to paint a picture of decisions and execution gone well for the New York Mets bullpen. But for the process-driven David Stearns, their president of baseball operations, a question has emerged about someone he let go after only three hours with the organization: Did the Mets make a mistake by not keeping reliever Justin Slaten? Slaten got a lineout, popout and strikeout from Anthony Santander, Ryan O'Hearn and Ryan Mountcastle, respectively. In the seventh, Slaten walked the leadoff hitter, Cedric Mullins, but cleaned up the inning with a double play from Colton Cower. Slaten pumped his fist following the second out. 4/06/24 | Red Sox's Justin Slaten Quickly Presenting Bullpen Value. Justin Slaten continuously impressed people around the Boston Red Sox organization after his Rule 5 path led him to the organization in the offseason. The 26-year-old inherited a poor situation in his MLB debut, surrendering a walk-off hit to Julio Rodriguez as the Red Sox lost to the Seattle Mariners on March 30. Slaten took the mound again on Saturday against the Angels. With a heavily-worked bullpen, the right-hander delivered two valuable innings, retiring the side in order with five of the six outs coming on strikeouts. 3/31/24 | Red Sox take the lead in the top of the 10th, only to lose to Mariners on a walkoff single in bottom half. The genesis of Justin Slaten's big-league career came with the greatest of stakes Saturday. Red Sox reliever Joely Rodriguez claimed the bottom of the 10th inning with his team leading, 4-2. Closer Kenley Jansen wasn't available, hampered by a bad back that has plagued him since spring training. A jamshot over third base scored the automatic runner from second, cutting the Sox' lead to just one run. Source: https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/03/31/sports/red-... |
