6/28/25 Red Sox's Justin Slaten Takes Big Step In Rehab: What's Next?. Slowly but surely, Justin Slaten is working his way back to the Red Sox. The right-hander played catch Friday for the first time since getting injured, Masslive.com's Christopher Smith reported Saturday. According to Smith's post on X, Slaten is feeling better but the team has not scheduled a bullpen session. Earlier this month, The Boston Globe's Tim Healey reported Slaten has an “apparent nerve issue in his neck, which is impacting his shoulder.”

6/27/25 Key Red Sox reliever takes step toward returning from IL (+ other injury updates from Alex Cora). When Red Sox setup man Justin Slaten hit the injured list with shoulder inflammation on June 1, the club thought he'd only be out for a couple weeks. Nearly a month into his IL stint, Slaten is finally about to take a first step toward returning. Slaten, who has been dealing with nerve issues in his neck/shoulder area and has been completely shut down from throwing for weeks, will play catch for the first time Friday, according to manager Alex Cora. Slaten last pitched for the Red Sox on May 28 in Milwaukee.

6/20/25 Why Alex Cora Must Be Careful With Key Red Sox Relief Pitcher. As of June 20, 2024, they ranked in the top 10 in each of those categories as well. By the end of 2024, they were in the bottom 10 in ERA. Justin Slaten has already missed time due to injury, placing more weight on other relievers. One of which is Greg Weissert.

6/18/25 Red Sox reliever with ‘robust arsenal’ comes up ‘huge’ again late in game. The Red Sox reliever has been "huge" with six holds and three saves in 11 outings since Boston placed Justin Slaten on the IL.

6/15/25 Red Sox Pitcher Dealing With Oddly Mysterious Injury. The Boston Red Sox will send the majority of their pitchers to the injured list at some point this season, which has become standard operating procedure in recent years for most teams across MLB. It's pretty rare for things to reach the point they have with Justin Slaten, though. Slaten is currently sitting on the injured list with an unidentifiable neck/shoulder injury that will keep him on the shelf indefinitely, according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. Slaten discussed the injury over the weekend, though everyone is still trying to figure out what is going on.

6/11/25 Red Sox Injury Update: Justin Slaten concern, Chris Murphy rehab, Wilyer Abreu. The Boston Red Sox have gotten mostly short outings from their starting pitchers and have played more extra-inning games than any other team in the league. Justin Slaten has been out of commission since he went on the injured list with shoulder inflammation, retroactive to May 29. Red Sox manager Alex Cora on June 10 told reporters that Slaten is progressing "slower than we expected," per Alex Speier of The Boston Globe.

6/10/25 Alex Cora provides ominous report on key Red Sox reliever, plus other injury updates. It had been the Red Sox' hope that reliever Justin Slaten would only miss a short period of time when he was first placed on the IL earlier this month. “It's slower than we expected,” said Alex Cora. Slaten was being counted on as a high-leverage option while occasionally handling closing duties when Aroldis Chapman wasn't available. “It's a big (loss),” said Cora.

6/08/25 Key Red Sox Pitcher Still Far From Return. Since the beginning of May, the bullpen has thrown 141.2 innings. Only the Milwaukee Brewers have used their bullpen more over that span. Justin Slaten was a key contributor in the bullpen early this season, often coming in for the seventh or eighth inning in close games. According to Baseball Reference, 18 of Slaten's 24 appearances were “high leverage”.

6/01/25 Red Sox put RHP Justin Slaten (shoulder) on 15-day IL. The Boston Red Sox put right-handed reliever Justin Slaten on the 15-day injury list due to shoulder inflammation. It was one of several roster moves the Red Sox made Sunday morning, which included replacing Slaten on the roster with right-hander Luis Guerrero. The latter was called up from Triple-A Worcester. The Red Sox also selected the contract of utility player Nate Eaton and optioned infielder Nick Sogard to Triple-A, designating catcher Blake Sabol for assignment to clear roster space.

6/01/25 Red Sox' Justin Slaten describes shoulder injury, gives timeline for return. The Red Sox bullpen took another hit Sunday, but the team is hopeful Justin Slaten's shoulder injury won't be a long-term thing. Boston placed Slaten on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to May 29, with right shoulder inflammation and recalled Luis Guerrero from the WooSox to take his place. Slaten hasn't pitched since Wednesday in Milwaukee. “Having a little bit of fatigue right now,” Slaten said.

4/23/25 Red Sox Could Target Twins' $4.1 Million Fireballer In Trade Deadline Surprise. The Boston Red Sox should be one of Major League Baseball's most active teams at the 2025 trade deadline. Every contender needs a strong bullpen, and the Red Sox are a little thin in that category. Beyond Justin Slaten, Garrett Whitlock, and Aroldis Chapman, the Red Sox have struggled to get quality innings from their middle relievers.

4/22/25 Red Sox Have Reason To Inquire About Athletics' $10 Million Reliever. The Boston Red Sox would be wise to keep an eye on the trade market for late-inning relievers. Justin Slaten is beginning to show signs that he could be Boston's closer, but nothing is set in stone. Aroldis Chapman began the season as the closer but hasn't been outstanding (Chapman allowed a home run on Monday), and Liam Hendriks's capabilities in 2025 are still impossible to predict. If Boston is serious about contending — as it should be with its current roster — chief baseball officer Craig Breslow needs to ensure that the Red Sox bullpen is supplied with enough talent to close games in October.

3/07/25 Hallsville's Slaten throws scoreless inning in spring appearance for Red Sox. Former Hallsville Bobcat Justin Slaten faced the minimum in an inning of work in the Boston Red Sox 20-5 spring training win over Miami on Friday. The righthander entered the game in the fifth inning and struck out Rob Brantly and Kyle Stowers in order. Derek Hill singled to right field but was thrown out at second base to end the inning and the day for Slaten.

1/21/25 Padres $46 Million All-Star Floated As Potential Red Sox Blockbuster Trade Target. It's nearly the end of January, and the Boston Red Sox don't have a solid answer on who their closer will be for the 2025 season. Preferably, that player would have closing experience, because neither Justin Slaten nor Liam Hendriks operated as a closer in 2024 for very different reasons. San Diego Padres star closer Robert Suarez has reportedly received trade interest this winter, and the Red Sox could look to pounce amid San Diego's financial woes.

1/16/25 This Red Sox 3-Player Trade Idea Would Bring Coveted Cardinals All-Star To Boston. 2024 rookie Justin Slaten showed well in his debut season in the bullpen, while 36-year-old Liam Hendriks is looking to bounce back from Tommy John surgery to recapture his two-time Reliever of the Year form. The Red Sox cannot, however, afford to sit on their hands for the rest of the winter in the relief pitching market. Trade talks have started to quiet down around the St. Louis Cardinals, but they have a two-time All-Star closer in Ryan Helsley who has widely been speculated to be available.

(AP Photo/Steven Senne) AP By Christopher Smith | csmith@masslive.com SAN ANTONIO — Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has his work cut out for him trying to upgrade the Red Sox bullpen. 9/18/24 Patience pays off for Red Sox, with reliever Justin Slaten in command since return from injury. While the Sox have used him for single-inning stints since he came off the IL rather than the multi-innings role in which he impressed prior to his injury, the results (9? innings, 2 runs, 10 strikeouts, and 0 walks following a scoreless seventh inning in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the Rays) and the stuff have been impressive. While the Sox have used him for single-inning stints since he came off the IL rather than the multi-innings role in which he impressed prior to his injury, the results and the stuff have been impressive. Including a scoreless inning in the Sox' 2-1 win over the Rays Wednesday night, Slaten has totaled 9? innings, 2 runs, 10 strikeouts, and 0 walks. “You see he can be a potential All-Star closer,” said pitching coach Andrew Bailey.
