1/16/24 | 2024 Seattle Mariners Farm System Overview: Introduction. The Mariners took Alford back a level after he struggled after a late-season promotion to Double-A last year, and he crushed out of the Everett bullpen; this year he'll take another swing at Double-A after gaining some experience against top-flight hitters in the Arizona Fall League. Jarod Bayless earns the 2019 Penn Murfee award for “Why Is This Guy Still in the Low Minors?” He throws an MLB-quality pitch in his slider and doesn't walk a single soul, while still limiting damage despite a subpar fastball, so the Mariners must have some specific things they want to see from him (perhaps more strikeouts?); otherwise, Arkansas' very porous bullpen could have used Bayless after they lost their entire pitching staff to the bigs last year. 6/01/23 | The "Fearsome Foursome" driving Seattle's bullpen success. If you've hung out on the bullpen rail at T-Mobile Park this season, you might have witnessed some of the shenanigans that go on among Seattle's good-natured group of relievers. All bullpens are full of, to borrow a term, Weird Little Guys, but it's remarkable how quickly the group in Seattle has gelled despite a significant amount of turnover and mainstays of last year's 'pen—Penn Murfee and Andrés Muñoz—currently on the IL. This group is led by four new faces to the 'pen this year: lefties Gabe Speier and Tayler Saucedo, and righties Justin Topa and Trevor Gott; a group Scott Servais has nicknamed “the Fearsome Foursome,” although that's far from the only nickname this crew has. The party starts at the bank of lockers on the left side just as you walk into the Mariners clubhouse. Source: https://www.lookoutlanding.com/2023/6/1/23744780/s... |
5/06/23 | Mariners place RHP Penn Murfee on IL, call up RHP Juan Then from Double-A. The Mariners have placed RHP Penn Murfee on the 15-day IL with inflammation in his right elbow (retroactive to May 4), and called up RHP Juan Then from Double-A. Then was originally signed by the Mariners back in 2016 out of the Dominican Republic, but was traded away in the deal that brought [gritting teeth so hard it accidentally re-invents Greek art] Nick Rumbelow to Seattle in 2017. This bottom-tier Dipoto trade also saw JP Sears go to the Yankees; Sears is now a starter with the Athletics who just twirled six innings of shutout ball against the Mariners in Oakland on Wednesday. 10/16/22 | Peña's 18th-inning HR sends Astros past Mariners for sweep. SEATTLE (AP) — Jeremy Peña and the Houston Astros just kept going. Scoreless inning after scoreless inning, as day turned into night in front of a frenzied crowd in Seattle. They eventually found a way. That's how the Astros reached the AL Championship Series for the sixth straight year. It's just what they do. Peña homered in the 18th inning, and the Astros beat the Mariners 1-0 on Saturday for a three-game sweep of their AL Division Series. “These guys, they know not to panic,” Houston manager Dusty Baker said. “They don’t get too excited. They don’t get too down. It means a lot.” Peña drove a slider from Penn Murfee deep to left-center for the rookie's first playoff homer, providing the only run in an afternoon full of dominant pitching and empty trips to the plate. The 18 innings matched the longest game in playoff history and the 6 hours, 22 minutes was the third-longest in time. Exhausting for everyone? Absolutely. But exhilarating for the Astros. “Man, that was a long game. But you still got to lock in, try to put together good at-bats,” Peña said. “I was just trying to stay inside the baseball, drove it in the gap.” Spoiling Seattle's first home playoff appearance since 2001, Houston continued its ALCS streak that began with its 2017 World Series title. Next up is the New York Yankees or Cleveland Guardians in Game 1 of the ALCS on Wednesday. While Yordan Alvarez got the big hits in the first two games in Houston, it was Peña that set the table for Alvarez’s opportunities. As Game 3 made its way into its sixth hour, Peña delivered another painful blow to the Mariners that ended their short return to the postseason. “We all know that we belong here now and we all know what it takes to get here and get beyond... 5/10/22 | Penn Murfee finding early success with Mariners after improbable journey to the big leagues. Mariners reliever Penn Murfee has taken an unusual and unlikely journey to the big leagues, so maybe it's fitting he had another odd journey after briefly getting demoted late last month while the team was in Tampa.
