3/03/25 2025 Free Agent Preview: Quarterbacks. PATRIOTS FREE AGENTS: Jacoby Brissett NOTABLE EXTERNAL FREE AGENTS: Jameis Winston, Jarrett Stidham, Jimmy Garoppolo, Joe Flacco, Justin Fields, Marcus Mariota, Teddy Bridgewater, Taylor Heinicke The Patriots enter the offseason without needing a starting quarterback, which has to feel good for head coach Mike Vrabel and EVP of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf. After selecting second-year QB Drake Maye with the third-overall pick in last year's NFL Draft, Maye acclimated himself well in year one. Despite a limited supporting cast around him, Maye ranked 17th among 32 qualified quarterbacks in ESPN's QBR metric, second-best among rookies behind only Offensive Rookie of the Year, Jayden Daniels. Maye's

2/26/25 NFL Analyst Predicts Jacoby Brissett Leaves Patriots, Starts For This Team. Jacoby Brissett was dealt a tough hand in his second stint with the Patriots, but he also didn't do anything to suggest he still was deserving of a starting quarterback job in the NFL. While it would make some sense for New England to retain the 32-year-old to be a mentor to Drake Maye as well as an experienced backup, Brissett himself probably is eager for a fresh start after a rough run in Foxboro, Mass., last season. ESPN's Seth Walder believes that opportunity could be found in Tennessee, where the Titans need a quarterback change but might not take one No. 1 overall in the draft.

2/08/25 WATCH: Patriots QB Drake Maye mic'd up in 2025 Pro Bowl Games. The New England Patriots had a rough 2024 season, finishing with an abysmal 4-13 record and firing their coach for the second time in two years. New England selected Maye out of the University of North Carolina with the third-overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, and while he started the year backing up Jacoby Brissett, he eventually took over as the team's starting quarterback.

2/05/25 Raiders Projected to Land Patriots QB. The New England Patriots are widely expected to move on from veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett during the upcoming NFL offseason. After Brissett entered the 2024 season as the starter with Drake Maye as his backup, he was unable to perform at a high level. Due to that, he was removed from the starting role much quicker than the Patriots would have liked. At 32 years old, Brissett simply doesn't look to be a fit for New England moving into the future.

2/04/25 Patriot Place: What offensive free agents should the Patriots retain and let walk?. The New England Patriots offense was amongst the worst in the league this past season, ranking 30th and managing 17 points a game. In today's NFL, offense is king; each of the top ten scoring units this year made the playoffs, while the worst ten now have top ten picks. While the unit as a whole was poor, we will discuss some bright spots the team should retain for the upcoming season and some New England should let go. Jacoby Brissett returned to New England this offseason after being shipped off to Indianapolis after an impressive rookie campaign in 2016.

1/25/25 Steelers Urged to Sign Patriots QB. The New England Patriots have quite a few free agents to make a decision on this offseason. One of them is none other than veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett. After beginning the 2024 season as the Patriots' starter, Brissett was quickly replaced by Drake Maye. Now, it sure seems that his tenure with New England has come to an end.

1/22/25 Patriots QB Could Land With Hated Rival. The New England Patriots began the 2024 NFL campaign with Jacoby Brissett under center, as rookie quarterback Drake Maye sat on the bench early on. Maye ultimately supplanted Brissett as the starter in mid-October, and now, after a largely ineffective stint as Patriots starting quarterback, Brissett is slated to hit the free-agent market. Brissett absolutely has value as a backup and will surely draw interest this offseason, and Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox has identified who he feels is the best fit for the veteran: the Miami Dolphins . "A few teams will likely target Brissett as a 2025 bridge option," Knox wrote . "However, the best move for him could involve a return to the Miami Dolphins.

1/17/25 Lame Duck Patriots Assistant Joins College Showcase Staff. Several assistant coaches await their fate with the New England Patriots as Mike Vrabel fills out his new staff in Foxboro. Robert Kugler will stay busy during that process. The 2024 assistant offensive line coach with the Patriots will coach the East team's offensive line during the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl along with Green Bay Packers assistant Eddie Gordon. Fellow New England assistant Drew Wilkins will serve as the East's defensive coordinator in the game. Kugler worked on Jerod Mayo's staff during New England's 4-13 season. The offensive line struggled after a patchwork unit came together in the offseason and further emphasized why quarterback Jacoby Brissett started the season over now-franchise

1/12/25 Drake Maye's next head coach a former New England Patriots legend. The New England Patriots began their season with Jacoby Brissett as starting quarterback, but after ineffective play through five weeks, New England turned to highly-touted rookie Drake Maye, This was a smart move by the Patriots, as their third over

1/01/25 Patriots quarterback Drake Maye in line to start season finale against Bills. In the brief window the media was allowed to view practice, Maye took reps ahead of veteran Jacoby Brissett and rookie Joe Milton, and appeared to be throwing without issue. ā€œI feel great,ā€ Maye said before practice. There are a lot of elements to consider, including putting Maye in harm's way so soon after suffering a head injury. A win could drop the Patriots as far as No. 4.

12/30/24 Jerod Mayo Clears Air About Odd Sight In Patriots' Blowout Loss. There hasn't been a ton of consistency with the Patriots' captaincy this season. New England was forced to backfill a pair of captains earlier in the campaign when David Andrews and Ja'Whaun Bentley both went down with season-ending injuries. Jabrill Peppers, meanwhile, had his captaincy revoked due to a legal matter that kept him away from the team for weeks. Jacoby Brissett noticeably did not have a ā€œCā€ patch on his jersey when he briefly replaced starting quarterback Drake Maye in the Patriots' home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium.

12/18/24 NFL Insider Weighs In On Mike Vbrabel-Patriots Speculation. Jerod Mayo is not exactly off to a great start in his first year as head coach of the New England Patriots. From the decision to continually start Jacoby Brissett under center for the first five weeks of the season to questionable play-calling and backpedaling comments about the team and coaching staff, Mayo has been in the hot seat pretty much since he was named Bill Belichick's successor in January. After the Patriots' fourth straight loss, questions regarding Mayo's status with the team ramped up. NFL Insiders began speculating whether Mike Vrabel would be the ideal candidate to replace Mayo should New England decide to part ways with the first-year coach.

12/16/24 QB Jacoby Brissett takes shot at the Patriots when discussing his year. The New England Patriots entered the 2024 NFL season with Jacoby Brissett as their starting quarterback and rookies Drake Maye and Joe Milton III as their backup and third-string quarterbacks, respectively. It didn't take a football genius to tell that New England didn't put Brissett in the best situation to succeed, as their offensive line was putrid, the weapons were lackluster and the coaching staff was inexperienced in play-calling.

12/15/24 QB Jacoby Brissett not sure he'll return to Patriots in 2025. New England Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett isn't sure he'll be returning to the team in 2025. After signing a one-year deal with the team as the bridge option for rookie quarterback Drake Maye, Brissett will likely seek out another opportunity that gives him a chance to play. When asked if a return to New England was in the cards, the veteran quarterback sounded uncertain.

12/13/24 Patriots' Jerod Mayo gets real on Christian Barmore after injury return. The New England Patriots' rebuilding season has gone like many expected so far. The Patriots tried to ride it out with Jacoby Brissett at quarterback for a while before making the switch to Drake Maye, and they currently sit at 3-10 while they finish out the season in December. Just like any young team, the Patriots are just hoping to see progress and signs of promise from some of their young players, and they have gotten that so far. Maye looks like a future franchise quarterback and is able to make plays to keep the Patriots in games almost every week despite playing with arguably the worst offensive supporting cast in the NFL.

12/10/24 Patriots release veteran wide receiver after healthy scratches. The New England Patriots haven't done the best job of surrounding their quarterbacks (Jacoby Brissett and Drake Maye) with capable wide receivers to throw to, and one of the biggest failures was the addition of K.J. Osborn. On Tuesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Patriots are releasing Osborn just 13 games into the season. Osborn, 27, played collegiately at Buffalo (2015-18) and Miami (2019) before the Minnesota Vikings selected him in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL draft.

12/07/24 Blockbuster Patriots trade suggestion lands All-Pro wide receiver in New England. The New England Patriots failed to surround their quarterbacks (veteran Jacoby Brissett and rookie Drake Maye) with the necessary talent at wide receiver this year, leading to struggles on the offensive side of the ball. Next offseason, they'll need to add more weapons if they want Maye to reach his full potential, and they'll have a number of ways to acquire talent. One thing that New England could do is put together a package to acquire a top receiver like Cincinnati Bengals wideout Ja'Marr Chase. Recently, Sports Illustrated's Matt Verderame suggested a blockbuster deal between the two squads that bring Chase to the Patriots.
