Sánchez and Abreu were at the cutoff and Baddoo has 2 years, 119 days. Because he is eligible for arbitration, Sánchez likely will get a salary in the $2 million range rather than about $800,000. Rookie catcher Francisco Álvarez was removed in the ninth after getting hit on the hand by a 97 mph pitch from Albert Abreu. Umpires ruled Álvarez swung at the pitch for strike three and still called him out as the New York Mets beat the New York Yankees 9-3 on Tuesday night in their Subway Series opener. Pete Alonso also homered twice and drove in a season-high five runs, while Justin Verlander pitched six shutout innings before being sat down in the victory. Albert Abreu's circuitous development took him through three organizations after debuting with the Yankees in 2020, and fans came into this year with the fading impression that Abreu's potential, elusive for three seasons, was still in there somewhere. Before 2022, you could draw comparisons from Abreu to Jonathan Loáisiga, as a young reliever poised to make the step up to late-inning weapon. The Yankees showed some belief in him by bringing him back into the fold after detours in Texas and Kansas City. The Kansas City Royals acquired right-hander Albert Abreu from the Texas Rangers in exchange for minor league right-hander Yohanse Morel on Thursday night. Abreu, who was designated for assignment on Monday, had a 3.12 ERA in seven relief outings for Texas this season.
