9/04/25 Team Streak needs to get hot and stay hot: Guardians breakfast today. BOSTON — The streaky Guardians, if they're going to have a chance to reach the postseason in the wild card race, need to get hot again. They beat Boston, 8-1, Wednesday night at Fenway Park to end a three-game slide and now they have a four-game series against the Rays, who are directly in front of them in pursuit of Seattle and the third and final American League wild card spot. During the last homestand, the Guardians took two out of three games from the Rays. The Rays, however, are currently on a six-game winning streak. “Every game counts. We know what this team is capable of,” said lefty Joey Cantillo, who held the Red Sox to one run over six innings on Wednesday. “It doesn't matter if we

The Guardians had options, but Stephen Vogt revealed that the team is going with their 12th-ranked prospect, Parker Messick, to start Wednesday's game. 7/22/25 Orioles can’t solve lefties on either side of ball in 6-3 loss to Guardians. CLEVELAND — There’s been a thorn in the Orioles’ side all season. Their left side, to be precise. Left-handed pitching is a hurdle the Orioles haven’t been able to figure out, and Tuesday night’s game against the Guardians proved no different. Joey Cantillo, a depth starter who spent most of the season in the bullpen, didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning and a Cleveland lineup stacked ...

5/27/25 Cleveland Guardians Make Intriguing Roster Move On Tuesday. After a brutal 7-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Cleveland Guardians will receive some much-needed help in the bullpen for the final two games of the series. According to GuardsInsider on X, the Guardians have optioned left-handed pitcher Joey Cantillo to Triple-A Columbus in order to make room for relief pitcher Hunter Gaddis. Gaddis made his last appearance the night before his bereavement leave, tossing two scoreless innings in Cleveland's 3-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers. The veteran currently holds a 0.86 ERA in 23 appearances, which is a huge addition to the bullpen for the final two games against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

4/28/25 Guardians Add Fresh Arm To Bullpen In Latest Roster Moves. The Cleveland Guardians have been battling a thin and overworked bullpen over the last week, and Saturday's doubleheader only made the situation more dire, as the Guardians had to use a plethora to cover the 18.0 innings. Cleveland made a couple of roster moves on Monday to get a fresh arm into the bullpen for their upcoming series against the Minnesota Twins. The Guardians optioned LHP Joey Cantillo to Triple-A Columbus a day after he threw 55 pitches in Cleveland's blowout loss to the Boston Red Sox. Cantillo is a starting pitcher by nature but has pitched out of the bullpen so far this season.

3/08/25 Guardians Pitcher Stresses Need To Make This Change During Starts. With the back of the Cleveland Guardians rotation having plenty of unknowns, Joey Cantillo has a tremendous opportunity to prove he deserves a spot on the Opening Day roster as a starter. One issue, which Cantillo is well aware of, is his lack of getting ahead in counts and zone command. This is something the lefty stressed he needs to do better following a recent Cactus League appearance. For whatever it's worth, Cantillo has pitched 6.0 innings so far this spring and given up four runs and seven hits, struck out six batters, and issued six walks.

2/26/25 Kailua native looks to seal firm spot in Cleveland Guardians rotation. When Joey Cantillo got called up to The Show last summer, he took full advantage of his time on the grand stage. In just his fifth career Major League start, the Kailua native was nearly flawless, retiring 20 straight batters in seven innings of work. Now the 24-year-old is in spring training with the Guardians and hoping to lock up a firm spot in Cleveland's rotation. “Joey said he'd always be a major leaguer since he was young,” said Kailua head baseball coach Corey Ishigo.

1/26/25 Young Pitcher Ready To Help Guardians Win In 2025. Joey Cantillo accomplished a lifelong dream during the 2024 MLB season. The Cleveland Guardians pitcher finally made his big league debut on July 28, officially starting his career. Due to injuries and underperformance from the rest of Cleveland's pitching staff, the rookie found himself in the Guardians rotation to round off the back half of the season. Cantillo faced some of the adversity during his first season, especially through his first few starts.

10/15/24 1 Stephen Vogt decision vs. Yankees draws Chris Rose response. Cleveland Guardians reliever Joey Cantillo had a historically bad performance in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees. Cantillo set an MLB record for the most wild pitches by a reliever in a playoff game, with four in just 0.1 innings pitched. Speaking of Guardians manager Stephen Vogt, Chris Rose questioned the decision of not pivoting away from Cantillo sooner and using the young lefty in such a tough spot in the first place.

10/15/24 Wild thing! Guardians rookie reliever Cantillo throws 4 of team's record-tying 5 wild pitches in Game 1 loss. On their first big night in New York this October, the Cleveland Guardians took a walk on the wild side. Rookie reliever Joey Cantillo threw four wild pitches, two that allowed pivotal runs to score in the third inning, and the Guardians lost 5-2 to the New York Yankees in their American League Championship Series opener Monday. “Joey has done a good job for us coming out of the bullpen, and that inning just kind of got away from us, and that was it,” manager Stephen Vogt said.

10/14/24 Joey Cantillo's wild Guardians outing puts Yankees in control of ALCS Game 1. Forget the long ball. The Yankees have discovered a new offensive weapon. At least as long as Guardians left-hander Joey Cantillo is on the mound. Cantillo, 24, threw four wild pitches while facing four batters Monday night, and the lack of control allowed the Yankees to take command of Game 1 in the ACLS at Yankee Stadium. 3 Joey Cantillo #54 of the Cleveland Guardians is pulled from the game during the fourth inning. 9/27/24 Guardians find their offense a little too late in 5-2 loss to Astros. Facing a potential playoff opponent Friday in the final series opener of the regular season, the Guardians fell behind early and did not produce much on offense until the ninth inning as the Astros handed Cleveland a 5-2 loss at Progressive Field. From a certain perspective, this kind of defeat could be considered a harbinger of ruin for Cleveland's championship aspirations as the two clubs are currently aligned for a possible playoff matchup. Astros hitters took advantage of some sloppy Cleveland defense in the first inning to score a run against rookie starter Joey Cantillo, and broke the game open with a two-out rally in the fourth that chased the left-hander from the game.

9/26/24 Division titles secured, Astros, Guardians aim for strong finish. The Cleveland Guardians and the Houston Astros could meet in this year's postseason, but for now, the two division winners aim to finish the regular season strong when they begin a three-game series on Friday in Cleveland. Cleveland (92-67) won its second American League Central title in three years and has clinched a first-round postseason bye. Houston (86-73) secured its fourth straight AL West crown and will host a best-of-three wild-card series starting next Tuesday. Rookie left-hander Joey Cantillo (2-3, 4.63 ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Guardians on Friday.

9/25/24 Vying to make playoff roster, Guardians rookie lefty faces Reds. Rookie Joey Cantillo could end up playing a vital role on the Cleveland Guardians' postseason pitching staff. In three starts since being recalled from Triple-A Columbus, Cantillo has allowed three runs -- two earned -- with eight hits and four walks while striking out 22 in 16 1/3 innings to go 2-0.
