Major league rosters expanded from 26 to 28 on Monday, giving the Boston Red Sox two additional roster spots, one for a pitcher and one for a position player. The Red Sox are calling up reliever Zack Kelly and catcher Ali Sanchez to fill those two spots. Kelly has appeared in 17 games this season and pitched his way to a 5.56 ERA over 22 2/3 innings. His last appearance came on June 29 in a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. The righty has shown strikeout stuff in the past, but hasn't been able to consistently string together scoreless outings in the big leagues. He'll slot into a low-leverage role. 8/02/25	Red Sox make 3 roster moves with bullpen as Justin Slaten takes big step toward returning. The Red Sox completed some housekeeping with their roster before Saturday's game, updating the status of three relievers. Boston activated righties Zack Kelly and Nick Burdi from the injured list and optioned them both to Triple-A Worcester, where they were both already rehabbing. Because Burdi was on the 60-day IL, the Sox needed a 40-man spot for him and cleared that by moving fellow righty Luis Guerrero to the 60-day IL. Kelly had been out since June 30 with a right oblique strain and originally had his option voided in favor of an injured list stint once further tests revealed the injury. 7/04/25	Red Sox make uncommon roster move, void reliever's option to put him on IL. The Red Sox made a rather uncommon roster move after Friday's rout over the Nationals. Four days after optioning reliever Zack Kelly to Triple-A Worcester, the club voided that transaction and retroactively placed him on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to June 30) with a right oblique strain. Kelly, who owns a 5.56 ERA in 17 MLB games this season, left Sunday's loss to Toronto with oblique tightness and underwent an MRI a day later. Needing a roster spot for Jordan Hicks, who was ready to be activated from the IL after coming over in the Rafael Devers blockbuster, the Red Sox decided to send Kelly down to the minors instead of placing him on the IL. 6/29/25	Red Sox reliever leaves game mid-inning with injury. Pitcher Zack Kelly left Sunday's Red Sox game in the top of the sixth inning, unable to continue with an undisclosed injury. Kelly, who had entered the game in the top of the fifth and allowed a run, opened the sixth by hitting Toronto second baseman Andres Gimenez in the foot with a pitch. As Gimenez was attended to by a member of the Toronto training staff, Kelly summoned a Red Sox trainer and manager Alex Cora to address an injury of his own.
