9/09/25 Cardinals closer Riley O'Brien returns home to face Mariners. Riley O'Brien realized a dream in 2022 when he made one appearance for his hometown Seattle Mariners. O'Brien didn't get a chance to pitch Monday as his St. Louis Cardinals lost 4-2 to Seattle, but he might get an opportunity Tuesday night when the three-game interleague series continues. "It's definitely weird to think about, but I'm excited to go back and hopefully throw some meaningful innings there," said O'Brien, who attended Shorewood High in the suburb of Shoreline, just north of Seattle.

9/07/25 Riley O'Brien finds late-inning home as avoiding IL pays off with win, save: Cardinals Extra. The payoff for the Cardinals' patience and attempt to avoid the injured list for reliever Riley O'Brien was his presence in the ninth inning of two wins this past weekend. Unavailable for back-to-back series earlier in the week as he dealt with some discomfort in his right shoulder, O'Brien and the Cardinals made the decision to see if extended rest would make him available without missing the mandatory 15 days on the IL. The weekend series against the San Francisco Giants was the test of that approach and whether the soreness would subside and he'd could contribute. A win Saturday and a save Sunday — and the Cardinals have their answer.

9/01/25 Cardinals shut down promising reliever with shoulder injury. While 2025 has not gone the way of the St. Louis Cardinals, the team keeps fighting to finish the season strong. A series win over the Cincinnati Reds has put the Cardinals almost back to .500, as they are 68-70 entering Monday's season opener against the Athletics. A series sweep would put the back over that mark, but St. Louis received a blow to its bullpen on Monday. MLB.com's John Denton reported via X (formerly Twitter) that high-leverage reliever Riley O'Brien has been shut down from throwing due to his right shoulder.

8/07/25 Nerves? So 2024. In LA return, Riley O'Brien meets Cardinals' challenge, claims career firsts. Before this eventful week at Dodger Stadium, the previous time Cardinals reliever Riley O'Brien stepped off that same mound it was opening day 2024 against the Dodgers and “one of the loudest environments you can possibly have,” he said. O'Brien admitted later to feeling “a little rattled out there.” Back at the spot of his rocky debut for the Cardinals, O'Brien collected the first win of his major-league career Monday and the first big-league save of his career Wednesday. Instead of the baggage of a year ago, packed up with his gear for the flight back to St. Louis were four game-used baseballs from the win and the baseball from the final out of the save.

4/27/25 In brief outing, Riley O'Brien creates moment he'll look to build upon: Cardinals Extra. Although his first outing on a major league mound since last September lasted just two pitches and one batter, Cardinals reliever Riley O'Brien came away with a moment he feels he can build upon. Promoted from Class AAA Memphis on Friday, O'Brien was summoned from the bullpen Saturday when the Cardinals led 5-3 with two outs in the seventh inning and while a runner stood on first base as Brewers catcher William Contreras was due up to bat. O'Brien, 30, threw two pitches to the two-time All-Star and got him to pop up on a 98.3 mph sinker thrown high and inside to end an inning Steven Matz started.

4/25/25 Cardinals make pitching roster move before Brewers clash. The St. Louis Cardinals have been struggling immensely on the mound, with their bullpen in particular having major issues late in games. Ahead of Friday's matchup with the Milwaukee Brewers, the team has called up reliever Riley O'Brien to hopefully give their pen a boost, as reported by Katie Woo. O'Brien has pitched well in Triple-A so far this season, striking out 14 hitters in just seven innings of work while allowing only three earned runs. The Cardinals have a 4.36 ERA as a staff right now, which ranks 23rd in the Majors.

3/31/24 Cardinals place right-hander Riley O'Brien on IL due to right flexor tendon strain. The St. Louis Cardinals placed right-hander Riley O’Brien on the 15-day injured list on Sunday, dealing another blow to their reworked bullpen. O’Brien has a right flexor tendon strain, and the team sent him back to St. Louis for additional tests. The 29-year-old O'Brien allowed one run and one hit in the seventh inning of Thursday's 7-1 loss at the Dodgers.

3/20/24 Relief pitcher Riley O'Brien made 'tough' time a potential turning point: Cardinals Extra. Even if Riley O'Brien had a crystal ball two years ago, he could not have foreseen the big league opportunity apparently within his grasp with the Cardinals. O'Brien, a former eighth-round draft pick of the Tampa Bay Rays, had been pitching for his third organization in 2022. A Seattle Mariners minor leaguer, O'Brien was with Triple-A Tacoma and, depending on traffic, between a one-hour or two-hour drive away from his hometown of Shoreline, Washington.

3/01/24 St. Louis Cardinals beat New York Mets 3-2 in spring training game. It was the kind of situation a manager wants to see in spring training. A pitcher competing for a spot in the bullpen, in this case the Cardinals' Riley O'Brien, came into Friday's game against the Mets with Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso the first two hitters due up in the fourth inning.

11/07/23 Cardinals acquire RHP Riley O'Brien for cash, claim Jared Young off waivers. The Cardinals are still circling the drain on the pitching market as they prepare to dive into a transformational off-season for the looks of the club's starting rotation. Before the purported big moves are made, though, we're seeing moves on the periphery of the 40-man roster from St. Louis to grease the wheels of the winter. The Cardinals acquired right-handed pitcher Riley O'Brien from the Mariners for cash considerations Monday, adding a 28-year-old reliever who thrived this past season in Triple-A Tacoma. O'Brien compiled a sterling 2.29 ERA in Tacoma.

2/28/23 Teoscar Hernandez, Ty France hit back-to-back homers as Mariners outlast Guardians. Powered by a pair of four-run innings to start the game — highlighted by back-to-back homers from Teoscar Hernandez and Ty France in the second inning — the Marines led 8-1 after two innings and 8-2 going into the sixth inning.
