12/14/25 Veteran pitcher Merrill Kelly returns to Diamondbacks on a $40 million, 2-year deal, AP source says. Veteran starting pitcher Merrill Kelly has agreed to return to the Arizona Diamondbacks on a $40 million, two-year deal, according to a person familiar with the move. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been announced and is pending a physical. The right-hander spent the first 6 1/2 years of his career with the Diamondbacks before the pending free agent was dealt to the Texas Rangers at this year’s trade deadline in July. He was good for both teams, finishing with a combined 12-9 record and 3.52 ERA. Kelly’s return to Arizona isn’t a huge surprise considering he’s a Scottsdale native and played in college at Arizona State.

9/07/25 Red Sox found the Diamondbacks' asking price for Zac Gallen to be too high. The Sox, like every contender, checked in with the Diamondbacks about righthanded starters and free-agents-to-be Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen. Kelly ended up going to the Rangers in a strong three-prospect package. Gallen, meanwhile, ended up staying with the Diamondbacks, with teams hesitant to give up significant prospects after he struggled through the first four months of the season. “To be able to spend the last two months here, I was super stoked,” Gallen said.

9/05/25 Merrill Kelly aims to halt Rangers' modest skid in opener vs. Astros. Texas resides in third place in the division, five games in back of Houston and 1 1/2 games behind the Mariners for the American League's final wild-card spot. While right-hander Merrill Kelly draws the start for the Rangers, Houston has yet to name a pitcher to start Friday's game. Given the rash of injuries for Texas that's included season-ending stints on the IL by second baseman Marcus Semien, outfielder Evan Carter and Cy Young Award candidate Nathan Eovaldi and a short term stay by shortstop Corey Seager, it's remarkable that the Rangers have made headway in both the division and wild-card race.

9/01/25 Merrill Kelly returns to Chase Field as visitor, remains interested in finishing career with Diamondbacks. For the first time in his seven-year Major League Baseball career, Merrill Kelly warmed up on the first base side of the diamond and threw a bullpen in right field. Kelly returned to Phoenix on Monday night with the Texas Rangers, after his hometown Diamondbacks traded him just before the trade deadline in July. Kelly said he had competing emotions upon learning he had been dealt.

8/30/25 Bruised, battered Rangers' heater continues with offensive onslaught against Athletics. The Texas Rangers, impervious to the onslaught of significant injures that they've totaled in the last two weeks, are officially on a run. The Rangers beat the Athletics 9-3 at Sutter Health Park Saturday night to clinch a series win, secure a fourth-straight victory and win for a seventh time in their last eight games with less than a month left in the regular season. Every Texas starter recorded a hit to compile 17 total while right-hander Merrill Kelly threw his fourth-straight quality start. Kelly, who has a 3.31 ERA in six games since the Rangers acquired him from the Arizona Diamondbacks at the July 31 trade deadline, allowed a pair of solo home runs to center fielder Lawrence Butler and designated hitter Brent Rooker in the third inning but otherwise silenced the Athletics in his first six innings of work.

8/26/25 Diamondbacks place LHP prospect Kohl Drake on injured list. The Arizona Diamondbacks placed top pitching prospect Kohl Drake on the injured list with a shoulder sprain on Tuesday, eliminating the possibility he could be a September call-up, according to a team source. The injury is not expected to affect Drake next season. Arizona acquired the 25-year-old left-hander at the trade deadline as one of three pitching prospects dealt by the Texas Rangers for Merrill Kelly. Drake threw four innings with no earned runs and seven strikeouts in his most recent start for Triple-A last Wednesday, his fourth appearance since the trade.

8/24/25 Rangers complete pitching-powered sweep of Guardians with Merrill Kelly's best start yet. The Texas Rangers completed a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Guardians, capped with a 4-0 win Sunday at Globe Life Field to leapfrog them in the American League Wild Card standings and remain in theoretical contention for a postseason berth. The win — paced by right-hander Merrill Kelly's best start yet for the Rangers — clinched the club's first sweep since they won six-straight vs. the Athletics and Atlanta Braves between July 21-27. The Rangers, at .500 once again with a 66-66 record, still trail the Seattle Mariners for the final Wild Card berth by four games.

8/13/25 Merrill Kelly Opens Up on Facing Former D-backs Teammates. The Arizona Diamondbacks will face one of their former rotation staples for the first time since the Trade Deadline ravaged Arizona's roster. Veteran right-hander Merrill Kelly is making just his third start for the Texas Rangers, and it'll be against the team that took a chance on him coming out of Korea in 2019. Kelly met with reporters, including AZCentral's Nick Piecoro on Monday, two days ahead of his start against Arizona. Kelly harbors no ill will toward his old team.

8/10/25 Mets need bullpen to step up with rotation providing historically poor length. One of the goals that the New York Mets had heading into the MLB trade deadline was to acquire some starting pitching. Alas, that was the only weakness that wasn't addressed by president of baseball operations David Stearns, with the outfield and bullpen both receiving the kind of upgrades the team was hoping for. It certainly wasn't from a lack of trying, as the Mets did reportedly make a run at Merrill Kelly of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

8/10/25 Arizona Diamondbacks lookahead: Texas Rangers, and possible Merrill Kelly reunion, next. If the Texas Rangers pitching rotation stays intact, ex-Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Merrill Kelly could face his former team two weeks after trade.

8/08/25 Identifying Biggest Weakness for Rangers Heading Down the Stretch. As the Texas Rangers get set for a massive series against the Philadelphia Phillies, the team is trying to chase down the Houston Astros in the American League West. The Rangers have been playing some good baseball of late and have hit their stride at the right time before the trade deadline. With a couple of needs, it was shocking to see that the most significant addition that the team made was to bring in veteran starter Merrill Kelly. The rotation of the Rangers has been one of the best in the league this season, but Kelly will certainly make it even better.
